Everyone’s wearing an Oura ring nowadays. If you’ve met someone who owns this wearable fitness tracker, it’s easy to see why. Just ask HuffPost editorial director of life and commerce Kristen Aiken, who swears the Oura ring clocked that she was sick ahead of her experiencing more obvious symptoms. “Not only is it sleek enough not to disturb my sleep, but it can track things my old AppleWatch never dreamed of,” she says. “Last time I had a cold, for instance, my Oura ring knew I was sick before I even did — it detected that my body temperature was slightly higher than usual, and within a day, a full-blown sinus cold hit me hard.”

Available in whole ring sizes 6-12, the Oura is a wearable fitness tracker that monitors your health without being as intrusive as a watch. It does so by using sensors located on the ring’s interior that monitor your pulse, giving you insight into your sleep fitness, lifestyle, mental cycles and daily activity and much more. It syncs with Android and Apple devices and works with over 40 apps, including Apple Health, Strava and Flo.
Aiken prefers the Oura because it’s “kinder to me than my AppleWatch.” She continues: “My AppleWatch is constantly telling me to push harder, move more, burn more calories, etc. (which isn’t a good idea for me, because I already tend to be a little hardcore), but my Oura ring regularly tells me to take a break, to go to bed earlier and to take a day off from workouts. It always makes me feel like I’ve done good enough, which is such a nice break these days.”
The Oura ring is even designed to go easier on you when you aren’t feeling well or are just in a recovery period thanks to its “Rest Mode” setting. “I’ve been wearing my Oura ring every day and night for a little over 3 months and it seems very accurate. I’m usually skeptical of wearable monitoring devices, but often try them nonetheless, so I use several different ones, along with non-wearable, more accurate monitors to compare reliability. The Oura seems to be spot on with my sleep, stress, and activity. It’s always detected my naps and routine “workout” activities (I created a label for my strenuous every day activities). Those are really the only stats I look at. Battery life is pretty good (mine usually needs charging nearly every 3-4 days). It’s very stylish and comfortable. I like the pulse ox and heart monitors as well. It works very well with the Apple Health app and integrates seamlessly. The Oura App is also very well designed and functions perfectly. I have not been very careful with my ring—I‘ve dropped it twice on a hard tile floor and I also wear it while working with power tools and while doing light construction/carpentry/craft work and it has held up exceptionally well. I also have worn it while washing my hands, but take it off during bathing/showering. When I first purchased it, I wore a silicone ring over it for protection, but it was too bulky. Overall, I am very happy with this tracker and would definitely recommend it. “I have never been so aware of my health before. I recently got Covid-19. 2 days prior to any symptoms, my Oura app picked up on a change in my usual vitals. At the time I had no idea why because I felt fine. Well, the ring knew I was getting sick before I started to actually feel it. I was able to prepare before by taking it easy. I decided to stockpile some airborne, a neti pot, soup and medicine before I was in bed feeling like crap. For the record the ring did not diagnose me! However, through my resting heart rate being unusually elevated and temperature it notified me by asking if anything had changed.I got tested 3 days after symptoms started to kick in and sure enough I had covid. “I recently, at 32 years old realized how birth control has impacted my body and is making it hard for me to now conceive. After a lifetime of always being on birth control, I went cold turkey and am now naturally tracking my cycle. You could go the thermometer route, but it can vary and you must have a good memory to remember to take your temp each morning. Through much research I found the Oura ring to be the most accurate. My partner had one when they first came out, provided by a military trial program. I knew a little about them and that his survived all he put it through. I ordered the sizing kit right before prime day and pulled the trigger on prime day. The size kit is crucial. As recommended I wore the size ring constantly to make sure it was comfortable. I was in between sizes but chose the one larger because my hands swell significantly overnight making the smaller one uncomfortable. I also moved around to different fingers to see about comfort. So far, the app has been able to track my cycle, along with the Natural Cycles app. The paid app is definitely worth it. I got a uti and it knew there was something wrong with my body before I did! I am also a petite female with very small wrists. I’ve had all the types of smart watches and fitness trackers out there and I cannot sleep with any of them. They hurt my wrists as a side and stomach sleeper. This is a great alternative. The quality and color of the black titanium is very pretty and it is bulky on my hand, but not unattractive. “I tried all 3 of the top rated rings. You can’t go wrong with any of the 3 top rings, Ultrahuman (make sure it is factory updated), RingConn (easiest to understand) and my favorite, even though you will have a subscription fee is the Oura. It’s amazing the health data you get from a smart ring. The Oura sleep report is supposedly 99% as accurate as a medical sleep study done in a lab. It tracks heart rate accurately, activity incl. steps daily as well as many workouts and gives you a resilience score as well as a sleep score each am after sleep. Mine is silver and I wear it on my ring finger on my non dominant hand. It can be connected to other products for recording even more data, such as keeping up w your BP.” — Elizabeth
“This ring is sooooo much better than the competition (in my case, the Fitbit that I had to return). I originally bought an expensive Fitbit that didn’t log my sleep nor capture my accurate vitals. For some reason it was unable to read my vitals the way that the Oura does, which is not only super accurate, but also so much more detailed information about pretty much everything related to my health & wellness. It maintains a charge much longer than Fitbit, and is less annoying and way more comfortable. The Fitbit was so tight around my wrist that it messed my skin up. The only drawbacks so far are that I don’t always know when the ring is running out of batteries, because the push notifications get lost amongst the myriad other messages I have, so I’m liable to wear the ring and forget to charge it and then I lose data. It also hurts my skin if I don’t shift the ring’s position from time to time. It also doesn’t automatically detect when I’m working out, so if I don’t specifically tell it that I’m working out, it doesn’t log the exercise accurately, and I keep forgetting to tell it to log my workouts. “I picked one of these up within the last couple of months. I had already tracked alot of stats via my phone but it was pretty inaccurate and I didn’t carry it everywhere with me, especially while around the house/property. I wear the ring 24/7 except to charge and while showering. Love the detailed stats it provides. Also far more accurate for step counting and mileage.
